Most doctors and patients tend to focus on the treatment of liver cancer and neglect the issue of post-treatment follow-up. Many doctors do not tell patients and family members when to come to the clinic, when to come for checkups and when further treatment is needed after surgery. Here, I would like to give a brief introduction on how to follow up liver cancer patients after surgery by combining the liver cancer diagnosis and treatment standards set by NCCN and China Ministry of Health and clinical experience. 1.How often is the follow-up appropriate? For patients who have undergone radical resection surgery, follow-up should be every 3 months within 2 years after treatment; every 6 months from 3 to 5 years; and every 6-12 months after 5 years. During the follow-up period, if signs of recurrence are found, prompt treatment should be given. 2.What tests should be done at each follow-up visit? The follow-up visit should include asking the patient whether there is any new discomfort since the last follow-up visit, physical examination (mainly abdominal examination), laboratory tests (mainly methemoglobin, depending on the situation, whether liver function and viral replication should be checked), imaging tests (mainly abdominal imaging, preferably upper abdominal MRI, intermittent chest X-ray, bone scan and chest CT if necessary) Since most hepatocellular carcinomas have liver disease basis of viral hepatitis and high recurrence rate, therefore follow-up is important for early detection of abnormalities and timely management.
