How do patients undergoing chemotherapy for gliomas move toward recovery?

Xiao Qian is one of my glioma chemotherapy patients. After completing six months of chemotherapy, she has been following up in my outpatient clinic for review. When I saw Xiao Qian in my clinic recently, her whole mental outlook was very different from before, and her whole body exuded peace and joy from the inside out. I knew that she had once suffered from severe insomnia, worry and anxiety, and when I asked her about the reason for the change, Xiao Qian said that she had to thank Taijiquan for helping her get through that period of pain, anxiety and confusion. Here, I invite Xiao Qian to share her feelings and experiences since she learned Taijiquan with you, hoping that those friends who suffer from the same disease as Xiao Qian can gain something from it and realize something. I have been suffering from glioma for three to four years, and after the surgery, I had radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and have been recuperating at home since then. I have been recuperating at home since then. I have nothing to do every day, and I can’t help thinking nonsense, so I have poor sleep quality at night, and then I have insomnia every night, and I feel dizzy and have headaches every day. The more dizziness and headache, the more afraid and worried about relapse. So I suffered every day, and then I couldn’t stand it, so I took Chinese medicine a few times, and when I took the medicine, I was better, but after a while I still had insomnia. Learning Taijiquan was a chance. One day, the whole night or can not sleep, look at the table is less than five o’clock, simply get up to not far from the creek to walk. When I got to the creek, I saw a group of people practicing boxing there, and the front leader was an old man in his seventies – that is, now my teacher Shen Guanming. I looked around and saw that they were practicing Taijiquan. I suddenly remembered that I had asked Director Zhang Hongwei of the Department of Neurosurgery after my surgery, “I can’t run or jump when I’m recovering, so what activities can I do?” At that time, he said to me, “If you have the opportunity, you can practice tai chi, which will help your body recover.” Then isn’t this a good opportunity now? So I followed the old man as he gesticulated from side to side. When he finished practicing a set and took a break, he asked me, “You want to learn Taijiquan too?” I nodded and said, “I want to learn, can you teach me?” He said, “Yes, you just have to come here every morning at this time.” Then he inquired about my health, and I gave a general description of my condition. The teacher also explained to me that Taijiquan should be taught according to physical condition. Anyone who is healthy can learn it, but those who are not in good health should practice softer forms. Mr. Shen selected a set of boxing for me, according to Mr. Shen, this set of boxing is the 92 style of Taijiquan that Zhang Sanfeng gave to his disciple to cure his illness. And Mr. Shen also practiced this set of boxing to cure his own illness. Teacher encouraged me by saying, “Practice well and you will be cured too.” When I started, my teacher said I had to practice the basics and build a good foundation before I could learn. The first thing I learned was the first of the Twelve Taiji Forms for Health: Breathing. It seemed simple, but it wasn’t easy for me. I had to take a break after doing it two or three times, so I practiced for a while, rested for a while, and practiced with them until seven o’clock or so before I went home. In the evening, I was worried about forgetting so I practiced a few more times on my own. The most amazing thing was that I didn’t lose any sleep that night, and I slept until morning. I was so happy and excited that I hurriedly got up and continued to learn. When I practiced, I didn’t dare to be too tired, and when I practiced for a while, my teacher would ask me to stop and take a rest, or to see how others practiced. As the days passed by, my mood relaxed day by day. When I was practicing, I was concentrating on practicing, and when I was taking a rest, I was talking and laughing with my brothers and sisters. A few days ago, there was a taijiquan competition for the senior group here, and I was especially shocked to see that they were all in their sixties and seventies, but they were not at all ambiguous in their punching, so I have to learn it well, and practice my body well. Now every morning, I always first press my legs and stretch my muscles; then I do warm-up exercises; I walk Taiji steps; and we discuss and talk about which style, which move, and how it is practiced. Then practice a few times what they have learned. And then learn two new moves. Considering my physical condition, my teacher said I couldn’t learn too much at one time. In this way, step by step, I have now learned the fiftieth style, “Like a Seal, Like a Closure”. The morning passed happily without any fatigue, but I felt relaxed and comfortable. The teacher said: this is good. In the evening, my teacher didn’t let me practice so much, he only let me walk Taiji steps and practice “Golden Rooster Stand Alone”. Or listen to his explanation of the key points of Taijiquan. Since I started practicing Taijiquan, I have been sleeping very well, and I have never had insomnia again. My mental state and my physical condition have become better, and I am no longer as breathless and dizzy as before, and the headaches and dizziness caused by insomnia have never appeared again. I really feel the benefits of practicing Taijiquan. Now, I am addicted to Taijiquan, and sometimes I forget that I am still a patient. My neighbors say I am healthier than they are. Now I don’t have time to think about those messy things, I only think about how to practice taijiquan to drive away those “enemies” that invade my brain. If it dares to invade, I have to take up arms against it. In my heart, I always have this belief: I can drive away this invader; I am not afraid of it! I am very grateful to Director Zhang Junping and those who cared about me and helped me, the doctors and nurses of Sanbo Brain Hospital, and my taijiquan teacher and brothers. I am now living day by day in a relaxed and happy way. I also hope that all of you, my fellow patients, will cheer up. Since you have glioma, you have to adjust your mindset to fight against it instead of being pessimistic and hopeless, and I hope that you will give yourself a goal to live well.
