Can appendicitis be detected by ultrasound?

Ultrasound can detect appendicitis with a fan-scan probe if the patient is obese or a line-array probe if the patient is thin. In mild cases of appendicitis, ultrasound can show a slight edema of the appendiceal wall and an echogenic or fecal-stone like glaucoma in the appendix. If the appendicitis is abscessed and there are adhesions to the surrounding tissues, the appendix may appear to be echogenically disorganized and uneven, and the structures within the appendix may be unclear. If perforation of the appendix occurs, an irregular mass with unclear borders and very disorganized and uneven internal echogenicity will appear around the appendix, and when the probe is pressed, the patient will experience significant pain, which will confirm the diagnosis when combined with the clinical picture.
