What tests should be done for bleeding after pregnancy

If bleeding after pregnancy occurs, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. If necessary, an ultrasound and a blood test for serum HCG (chorionic gonadotropin) or progesterone will be ordered to help diagnose whether the pregnancy is normal in utero, spontaneous abortion, ectopic pregnancy, or gravida. If a gestational sac is visible in the uterus, a preterm miscarriage is usually considered; if no gestational sac is found in the uterus and the chorionic gonadotropin is higher than 1500 IU/L, the possibility of ectopic pregnancy must be considered.
