Do you suffer from dry eyes in the age of video networks?

With the advent of the paperless office era and the popularity of the Internet, the use of computers, smartphones, TVs and other video terminals have become essential to people’s daily lives and take up most of their working time and entertainment time. Due to prolonged eye use, more and more people feel eye discomfort symptoms, such as dry eyes, foreign body sensation, eye redness, eye itching, increased secretion, fatigue, tearing, and even intermittent blurred vision, etc. This part of patients in outpatient clinics is increasing, and after detailed eye examinations, the proportion of patients diagnosed with dry eyes is also high. First of all, let’s introduce why prolonged use of computers, cell phones and other video terminals can cause dry eyes. Under normal circumstances, human eyes blink 5-10 times per minute, and each time they blink, the eyelids act like brushes to spread an even layer of tears (eye tears) on the eye surface, playing a role in lubrication, moisturizing and protection, while when people gaze at the display screen, the number of blinks is invariably reduced, plus the common use of air conditioning in offices and homes nowadays accelerates the evaporation of water from the eye surface, making the eyeballs Long exposure to the air, resulting in eye dryness discomfort, long-term so it is easy to cause dry eye, serious cases will even damage the cornea. In addition, the display screen consists of small fluorescent dots, the eye must constantly adjust the focus to ensure clear vision, too long, the eye muscle will be too fatigue. Electromagnetic waves, ultraviolet rays, radiation, harsh colors and infrared rays from the screen can also irritate the eyes. According to surveys, the prevalence of dry eye in China is about 21-30%, with a higher prevalence in women than in men. The goal of dry eye treatment is to relieve the symptoms of eye discomfort and to protect the patient’s visual function. In addition to eye drops such as artificial tears prescribed by a physician, it is also important to improve the working environment and remove the cause of the disease: avoid operating the computer continuously for long periods of time and pay attention to breaks in between. Usually rest for 5-10 minutes after 1 hour of continuous operation. Maintain a good working posture, so that the eyes are flat or mildly downward looking at the screen, which can make the neck muscles relaxed and minimize the area of the eye exposed to the air. The distance between the eyes and the computer fluorescent screen should be kept at 60 cm or more. The light in the surrounding environment should be soft, the brightness of the computer screen should be appropriate, and the height of the table and chair should match the height of the computer. If you are working in an air-conditioned environment for a long time, you can humidify the environment. Drink water and tea, if the water temperature is appropriate, you can also use the heat to smoke the eyes, or use the appropriate temperature of the hot towel compresses a compress eye, closed eye rest to relieve fatigue.
