What tests are required for a sprained ankle?

During the examination, the doctor determines whether there is a fracture by visual inspection and palpation, and clarifies whether there is any damage to the medial and lateral ligaments with the help of some specialist investigations, such as the ankle anterior drawer test, internal rotation stress test and external rotation stress test. The doctor will also use x-rays to rule out the possibility of a fracture. Sometimes the doctor will perform an X-ray as appropriate for a patient with even a mild sprain to avoid missing the diagnosis of a fracture. When the fracture is not significantly displaced or when there is an incomplete fracture, the diagnosis is difficult to make on X-rays and a CT examination is required to confirm the diagnosis. If X-rays and CT do not reveal an obvious fracture but swelling and pain are more pronounced, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is required to avoid missing the diagnosis of an ankle ligament injury.
