Treatment of ankle sprains during sports

The treatment of ankle sprains during sports is as follows. Acute injuries should be immediately treated with continuous cold compresses on the ankle joint to reduce local bleeding and swelling, and after 48 hours, physiotherapy can be applied locally to promote tissue healing. In case of partial ligament injury or ligament laxity, the ankle should be fixed in 90 degree dorsiflexion, extreme inversion or valgus position in a boot-type cast, or a wide cloth strip or bandage can be used for 2-3 weeks. If a complete rupture of the ligament occurs, combined with ankle instability or a small avulsion fracture, a tubular cast may also be fixed for 4-6 weeks. If the fracture fragment enters the ankle joint space, ankle arthroscopy or incisional surgery is required to treat the fracture or even repair the ruptured ankle ligament at the same time, with postoperative adjunctive external fixation for 3-4 weeks.
