You should not move your ankle after a sprain. It is important to apply early brakes when the ankle is sprained, as failure to do so can lead to further damage to the ankle. If a fracture is present it can easily displace the broken end and can cause severe pain. If there is a simple soft tissue injury, it can further aggravate the swelling and pain of the soft tissue, promote the exudation of intertissue fluid, and in severe cases, tear the ligaments of the ankle joint. Therefore, when the ankle is sprained it must not be active and should be strictly braked to allow the ankle to heal smoothly in a stable environment.
