What’s wrong with baby’s red tears?

Baby’s tears are red in color, which may be caused by infective conjunctivitis, allergy, mother or baby taking rifampicin.
1. Infectious conjunctivitis: when baby’s eyes are infected with bacteria and infectious conjunctivitis occurs, the bacteria may damage the capillaries of the eyes leading to hemorrhage, and the baby may show that the tears are red.
2. Allergy: when the baby’s eyes are allergic to a certain substance, it will lead to an increase in the permeability of the capillaries in the eyes, and if the red blood cells leak out, it is possible to have tears with red color.
3. Mother or baby taking rifampicin: Rifampicin, a drug commonly used in the treatment of tuberculosis, may cause urine, stools and tears to turn reddish-orange. Tears that are red in the baby’s eyes may also be caused by the mother’s use of rifampicin, or by the parents feeding the baby medications such as rifampicin.
There may be other reasons why a baby’s tears are red, and when this happens, parents need to take their child to the hospital promptly.
