Surveillance screening for people at high risk of thyroid cancer

Screening for thyroid cancer is not recommended for the general population. However, screening should be performed as early as possible for those who are at high risk for thyroid cancer with the following medical history: 1. history of childhood head and neck radiation exposure or exposure to radioactive fallout; 2. history of systemic radiation therapy; 3. history of DTC, MTC or multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type II, familial polyposis, certain thyroid cancer syndromes (e.g. multiple malignancy syndrome, Carney’s syndrome, Werner’s syndrome and Gardner’s syndrome). Past or family history of thyroid cancer syndromes (e.g., multiple malignancy syndrome, Carney syndrome, Werner syndrome, and Gardner syndrome).
