What is the cause of constipation

Constipation is a common symptom of the digestive tract in which the number of bowel movements decreases, the volume of stool decreases, the stool is dry, and it is difficult to defecate. There are many causes of constipation, and they are described below. Constipation is often divided into two main categories: organic and functional, in terms of etiology. The most common organic causes are occupational lesions of the intestine, such as intestinal tumors, inflammation, etc.; followed by endocrine or metabolic diseases, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes; and anal diseases such as hemorrhoids, neurological lesions, colon lesions such as congenital megacolon; and finally, the influence of pharmacological factors, such as taking iron, anti-anxiety drugs, diuretics, anti-Parkinsonian drugs, etc. Functional causes are commonly due to lack of stimulation of the colon with low food intake; stressful work, fast-paced life, and high pressure interfering with normal bowel movements; insufficient tone of the abdominal and pelvic muscles, insufficient pushing force for defecation, and difficulty in expelling feces from the body; old age and frailty, low activity, and intestinal spasm. Functional constipation can be divided into slow-transmission type and outlet obstruction type in terms of pathogenesis. The slow-transmission type is mainly caused by the weakened contractile movement of the intestine, which slows down the movement of feces from the cecum to the rectum, while the exit-obstruction type is caused by the uncoordinated muscles of the abdomen, anorectum and pelvic floor, resulting in the obstruction of fecal discharge. Through the introduction of the above causes of constipation, if the symptoms of constipation occur, you should promptly find the cause of symptomatic treatment, and reasonable adjustment of diet to reduce the impact of constipation on life and work.
