The manifestations of Yin deficiency and fire exuberance (deficiency of Yin essence in the body, resulting in hyperactive fire) commonly include five heart-heat (heat in the hearts of the hands and feet, and self-consciousness of the heart and chest), dry mouth and sore throat, lumbar and knee soreness and tenderness (feeling of soreness and weakness in the lumbar area and knees), hot flashes (a burst of heat), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, and stopping of sweating after waking up), and so on. Commonly used prescriptions include Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan and Yu Nu Decoction. 1. Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (知柏地黄丸) is composed of Zhi Mu (知母), Huang Bai (黄柏), Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata (熟地黄), Cornus Officinalis (山茱萸), Mudan Pi (牡丹皮), and Chinese yam. It is used for treating deficiency of yin in liver and kidney (deficiency of yin and fluid in liver and kidney) and inflammation of deficiency fire. It has the effect of nourishing yin and lowering fire (nourishing yin essence and lowering fire). 2. The formula of Jade Maiden Decoction includes Gypsum, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Ophiopogonis, Rhizoma Zhi Mu, and Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae. It is effective in clearing stomach heat and nourishing kidney yin. Chinese medicine prescription should be applied under the guidance of clinicians, and should not be used on its own.
