Can I eat and drink water before the nucleic acid test?

To improve the accuracy of the pharyngeal swab nucleic acid test, it is recommended that the subject not drink any water 30 minutes prior to the test. Although there are no strict dietary requirements for the nucleic acid test, eating and drinking within 30 minutes prior to the test may affect the results of the nucleic acid test. The patient can eat lightly and drink a little water 2 hours before the test to ensure that the body is not hungry and that the throat is moist to facilitate taking the test sample and to avoid hypoglycemia during the test. Nucleic acid testing usually uses testing swabs to take secretions from the throat or nasopharynx, called pharyngeal swabs and nasal swabs. It is necessary to drink a moderate amount of water to keep the throat moist to avoid the inability to take samples due to throat dryness. It is not advisable to eat too much or greasy before the test, which can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and, together with the stimulation of the pharyngeal swab, may lead to vomiting. Patients are advised to eat sparingly 2 hours before the test and rinse their mouths after meals to keep them clean. Take care to avoid drinking, eating, smoking, drinking or chewing gum for 30 minutes before sampling to prevent dilution of nasopharyngeal secretions, which may have an impact on the test results. In addition, nucleic acid test results are usually available on the same day after the test, and in some areas on the next day. It is recommended that the subject consult with the testing personnel to avoid a long wait. Wear a good mask before and after the test and keep a distance from others. Even if a negative test result is normal, personal protection should be done to avoid being inadvertently infected.
