Why non-invasive ventilators should be used long-term

The advantages of noninvasive ventilator therapy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are that it is easy to perform, precise and effective, and non-invasive. However, it should be noted that, just as patients with hypertension and diabetes require daily medication, NIVs should be worn every night at bedtime and should be used for a long time. Due to individual differences, there is an adaptation process of “human-machine adaptation” at the beginning of wearing. Only with long-term use can the effectiveness of the therapy be optimized. There is no “addiction” to the ventilator. Patients often ask if they can stop wearing the ventilator after a certain period of time. Theoretically, this is possible. It is possible to get off the ventilator after a long period of wearing a non-invasive ventilator as long as you exercise and lose weight at the same time. However, close observation is needed and treatment should be continued once apnea occurs again.
