Thyroid surgery in a few days

Patients with thyroid disorders are discharged from the hospital about 5 days after surgery. Thyroid disorders are usually benign, such as nodular goiter, simple thyroid adenoma, and cystic thyroid adenoma, etc. The usual surgical procedure is a major excision of the affected side of the thyroid gland; malignant thyroid disorders such as thyroid cancer require a total excision of the affected side of the thyroid gland plus an isthmus plus a subtotal excision of the contralateral thyroid gland. If there are no complications, the stitches can usually be removed in 3-5 days and the patient can be discharged without any abnormalities. If the supraglottic nerve or the recurrent laryngeal nerve is damaged during surgery, and if symptoms such as hoarseness or choking on water occur after surgery, or if other complications arise, the hospital stay will need to be extended. In addition, patients should pay attention to their diet after thyroid surgery, eat foods rich in vitamins, iodine and proteins, avoid stimulating foods, live a regular life and keep a relaxed mood; they can exercise properly and avoid excessive neck activities.
