ERCP is the treatment of choice for common bile duct stones

Compared to conventional surgery, ERCP technique is less invasive, has less pain, better results, faster recovery and good reproducibility, it is the current preferred method for common bile duct stone treatment. What is the ERCP technique? The endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography technique is to insert the duodenoscope through the mouth to the descending duodenum and enter the bile duct and pancreatic duct through the duodenal papilla for imaging and other diagnostic operations. ERCP technology has developed from a purely diagnostic technology to a comprehensive technology mainly for treatment, and is an important part of modern biliary and pancreatic pathology. etc. Common bile duct stones can cause a variety of critical illnesses Gallstones are divided into gallbladder stones, intrahepatic bile duct stones and common bile duct stones, most of which are gallbladder stones, and the incidence of common bile duct stones is high in China. ”Among the various types of gallstones, common bile duct stones are the most dangerous and include a variety of acute and chronic conditions. The most common is acute obstructive cholangitis, with typical clinical manifestations of epigastric pain, fever and jaundice, which can develop into purulent cholangitis and liver abscess with life-threatening symptoms such as shock and multi-organ failure.” ”Another acute condition is acute pancreatitis, the opening of the pancreatic duct of the pancreas and the opening of the common bile duct is the same as the duodenal papilla, bile duct stones can cause obstruction of the common bile duct at the same time can cause obstruction of the pancreatic duct, poor elimination of pancreatic juice, inducing pancreatitis, and even the development of severe pancreatitis, its condition is heavy, long course, large medical costs, there is a high mortality rate. The main cause of acute pancreatitis is common bile duct stones in about 70% of patients, so the public should pay particular attention to this. In chronic conditions, chronic recurrent bile duct obstruction and inflammation caused by common bile duct stones can lead to long-term liver function impairment and eventually develop into biliary cirrhosis and, in some cases, even into bile duct cancer.” Application of ERCP technology for common bile duct stones has many benefits How to deal with common bile duct stones? Among the various methods, drug lithotripsy treatment is not effective. Surgical treatment is the main effective means to treat common bile duct stones. In the past, most of the treatment methods of conventional surgery were adopted, but there are problems such as large trauma, slow recovery after surgery, difficult to deal with stone residue or recurrence, and more late complications. However, with the development of modern medicine, ERCP technology for common bile duct stones can solve these problems. First, ERCP has diagnostic advantages during the procedure, allowing cholangiography, which is the gold standard for the diagnosis of bile duct lesions and the final method of confirming the diagnosis of common bile duct stones. The ERCP technique has a high success rate and is minimally invasive, as it performs minimally invasive surgery through the gastrointestinal tract and allows stone extraction through an incision of less than 1 cm in the duodenal papilla; it reduces the recurrence rate of stones, and the ERCP technique not only allows stone extraction but also addresses the above-mentioned causes of stones found intraoperatively. The ERCP technique is extremely repeatable. The common bile duct stones are prone to recurrence, and it is significantly more difficult to operate again after recurrence if traditional surgery is taken, with more complications, while it is simpler to operate again with ERCP technique, with higher success rate and less damage. Especially for some special patients such as elderly and frail patients, ERCP can be performed by placing bile duct stents and establishing good bile duct drainage, which can relieve bile duct obstruction, infection and other symptoms without removing stones, and about 80% of patients will gradually reduce and shrink bile duct stones, and after about six months, better conditions for ERCP operation can be created for successful stone extraction. Therefore, ERCP technique is currently the preferred method for the treatment of common bile duct stones.
