According to statistics, the incidence rate of brain tumor in China is about 10-23/100,000 people. Among brain tumors, glioma accounts for about 45% on average, and is the intracerebral tumor with the highest incidence. Glioma is a tumor that occurs in the neuroectoderm. There are two types of tumors occurring in the neuroectoderm, one formed by mesenchymal cells, called glioma, and the other formed by parenchymal cells, called neuronal tumors. Since these two types of tumors cannot be completely distinguished from each other in terms of pathogenesis and morphology, and gliomas that originate from mesenchymal cells are much more common than neuronal tumors that originate from parenchymal cells, neuronal tumors are included in gliomas and are collectively called gliomas, and therefore there are more glioma types. Among glioma types, astrocytoma is the most common, followed by glioblastoma, followed by medulloblastoma, ventricular meningioma, oligodendroglioma, pineal tumor, mixed glioma, choroid plexus papilloma, unclassified glioma, and neurogenic tumor. For example, astrocytomas are most common in the cerebral hemisphere in adults and in the cerebellum in children; glioblastomas almost always occur in the cerebral hemisphere; medulloblastomas occur in the cerebellar earth; ventricular meningiomas are most common in the fourth ventricle; and oligodendrogliomas occur mostly in the cerebral hemisphere. The etiology of glioma is still not very clear. The degree of malignancy of glioma determines the speed of tumor growth, the early and late appearance of symptoms, the severity and prognosis. Glioma can grow in any part of the brain, and the symptoms are different depending on the location of the tumor inside the brain. The clinical manifestations of glioma may include headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of vision, unresponsiveness, indifference, personality change, psychiatric symptoms, phantom smell and hearing, epilepsy, unexplained aphasia, numbness and weakness of limbs, hemiparesis, etc. Glioma may include uncoordinated movement of hands, feet or upper and lower limbs, unstable walking, tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, etc. If these symptoms occur, you should seek medical attention and have appropriate tests done to find out whether there are gliomas or other brain tumors in the skull. The main treatment for them is surgical removal, combined with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, genetic, immunological and Chinese medicine. Although glioma is a kind of neurological tumor that is difficult to cure, it is not without any solution at all. Nowadays, after standardized and individualized comprehensive treatment, the treatment effect of glioma has been significantly improved, and the prognosis of glioma is still better compared with other systemic malignant tumors, especially low-grade glioma. Therefore, we would like to remind glioma patients and their family members to do their best to get treatment, establish a firm belief in overcoming the disease, have the mindset to face all illnesses openly, maintain a healthy and happy mood, and try to adhere to normal life and work while carefully completing the doctor’s orders, miracles will always happen.
