Many patients and families are anxious to have surgery sooner once they are examined and found to have a mass on their lungs and admitted to the hospital, but are told by their doctors that they have to undergo many tests, blood draws, films, ultrasounds, and bone scans. Each one of them requires an appointment in line, and sometimes it takes a long time to wait. But why do these tests have to be done? First, diagnosis of the disease, whether it is lung cancer or not, whether it has spread or not, including: head, abdomen, bone metastasis, etc., tumor markers from blood sampling. The location of tumor and lymph nodes require enhanced CT of the chest and fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Second: preparation of patient’s physical condition including: heart, lung function, hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure and blood glucose control, no smoking time enough. Both conditions must be prepared before surgery can be scheduled.
