“Ghostly possession”?

Grandma is over 70 years old, very cheerful and easy-going, but especially feudal and superstitious, has always liked to go to the street stalls to find someone to tell her fortune or go to the temple to burn incense and worship Buddha. The family thinks that grandmother is old, she likes to do what let her do it. But a few months ago, I don’t know what happened, Grandma always said she was “possessed”, suspicious all day long and did not go out. Especially in the last two weeks began to be more serious, with a red rope tied to the forehead, saying that there are ghosts looking for her. For this reason, the grandmother even refused to leave the room, only to stay in the room every day to walk around, but also set up a small stove in the room, cooking in the room to eat, no one could not persuade her. Grandpa also moved to another room to ignore her for this reason, and now the family is in turmoil for Grandma. Let’s review his grandmother’s mental performance in recent months: she said she was “possessed by a ghost”, she was suspicious all day long and did not go out; she tied a red rope to her forehead and said that a ghost was looking for her. For this reason, even the door refused to leave the room, only to stay in the room every day to walk around, but also set up a small stove in the room, cooking in the room to eat, no one could not persuade her. No one could persuade her. The family was in turmoil. We briefly analyzed his grandmother’s mental performance: she said she was “possessed by a ghost” and that a ghost was looking for her. She may have hallucinations; she is suspicious all day long and does not go out, but cooks and eats in her room by herself. There may be delusions of victimization; no one can persuade her, and the family is in turmoil. This may reflect a lack of self-awareness. Her psychiatric condition has gradually worsened and has seriously affected her family. Combining the above manifestations, we initially considered that Xiao Li’s grandmother was suffering from a psychotic disorder, rather than a psychological problem as suspected by Xiao Li. Diagnostically, there are generally three levels of mental ill health, psychological problems, psychological disorders and psychological diseases. The hallucinations, delusions and lack of self-knowledge exhibited by Xiao Li’s grandmother belong to psychotic symptoms, which generally only appear in severe mental illnesses (organic psychosis, schizophrenia, affective psychosis and reactive psychosis). Like Xiao Li’s grandmother who is older, a physical examination should be done first to rule out psychosis due to physical illness. If the results of the physical examination are favorable, further diagnosis is made in the outpatient clinic through a psychiatric examination. If the problem is psychological, it can be solved through communication. However, in the case of Xiao Li’s grandmother, reasoning cannot improve her mental condition and must be treated by psychiatric psychiatry. At present, the treatment of psychological disorders generally recommends a combination of medication and psychotherapy. For patients with psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and lack of self-knowledge, medication is particularly important. Currently, psychiatric medications have improved considerably compared to the previous ones, with good results and few side effects. They can also be taken safely and effectively by the elderly under the guidance of a doctor.
