How to manage acute appendicitis during pregnancy

In case of acute appendicitis during pregnancy, the first step is to consult a doctor, because in case of acute abdominal pain, the obstetrician and gynecologist will help the patient to examine the fetus, the placenta and the uterus, and when the doctor suspects the possibility of appendicitis, he/she will ask the surgeon to assist in the diagnosis, including a series of examinations, to confirm the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in pregnancy, which usually requires surgery. Because the probability of appendiceal perforation is higher, 1.5-3.5 times higher than that of common acute appendicitis, and because the enlargement of the uterus after pregnancy reduces to a greater extent the confining effect of the appendix omentum, including other abdominal cavities on appendiceal inflammation, and because the probability of successful conservative treatment is low, surgery is usually recommended after the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. In the case of patients with large gestational weeks, when the diagnosis cannot be confirmed, a caesarean section is also needed to understand the location of the pain, because at this time the fetus is mature and delivery can also be considered, and the surgical approach is still recommended. However, patients with small gestational weeks, for example before 12 weeks, have similar symptoms to those of common appendicitis and are easier to diagnose. Diagnosis is relatively difficult during mid-trimester, but if appendicitis is still highly suspected through conservative treatment or after treatment, prompt surgical treatment is recommended.
