We once met a couple who had been married for 3 years without having children and went to the hospital for a checkup. The wife did all the tests that should have been done and no abnormalities were found in her reproductive function. The husband was asked to have his semen analyzed, but no matter how much his wife told him, he was adamant that he would not be examined, convinced that he had no problems, and threw out a sentence to his wife, “If you ask me to do it again, I will get a divorce”. Afterwards, we learned that his husband was remarried and had given birth to a daughter with his ex-wife. Some men are so confident in themselves that they think it is none of their business to be infertile, and if they are asked to take a checkup, they feel that their self-esteem has been greatly hurt and they feel that they have lost face. In fact, there are misunderstandings in their judgment of their own reproductive ability, and the common ones are as follows. (1) If you have a history of childbearing, there will be no problem with your reproductive ability. The man in the above example is such a case. This situation mostly occurs in remarried men, or patients who have given birth to a second child, or couples who have had a miscarriage. In men, the fact that they were able to have children in the past only means that they were normal then, but it does not guarantee that they are normal now. There is also a cumulative effect of some adverse factors on sperm quality, such as varicocele, high temperatures, and computer radiation. Therefore, if infertility occurs, both husband and wife should be examined at the same time. (2) Fertility is fine as long as you are physically fit. Fertility and physical fitness have a certain relationship, but there is no inevitable connection, strong body can only show that the body is healthy, but can not show that the reproductive capacity is necessarily normal. Clinically, we often encounter tall and healthy men, the results of a test is no sperm or severe oligospermia infertility patients. (3) Sexual function is normal, reproductive ability is normal. Sexual function is only one aspect of the performance of reproductive capacity, normal sexual function is to ensure that one of the basic conditions of normal fertility, and ultimately whether the fertility also depends on the quality of sperm, or semen quality is normal. There is a considerable portion of low sperm quality male infertility patients, their sexual function are very good, but can you say that their reproductive ability is normal? (4) Bad habits have no effect on fertility. In fact, it is not, some bad habits, the impact on their reproductive capacity is very big. For example, smoking, alcoholism, sedentary, watching computer or TV for a long time, taking sauna, wearing tight jeans, etc. are not conducive to sperm production and maturation.
