Can excessive calcium supplementation lead to kidney stones?

Calcium supplementation and kidney stones are not necessarily related. The occurrence of kidney stones is influenced by multiple factors such as genetics, environment, nutrition and urinary calcium concentration.       Currently, the recommended dose of conventional calcium supplementation (about 600 mg of calcium) does not increase the risk of kidney stones and is safe. Of course in excessive calcium supplementation, more calcium is excreted through the kidney filtration, and in the urinary system, the urinary calcium content is higher, which will increase the chance of stone formation in the urinary system. Therefore, for those patients who are prone to kidney stones, before supplementing with high doses of calcium and vitamin D, blood and urine calcium levels should be properly monitored, and if urine calcium is normal, calcium supplementation can be appropriate.
