Kelp can be eaten by people with gout. Although kelp is a seafood, it is a common low purine food. There is no correlation between the consumption of kelp by gout patients and the onset of gout arthritis and the level of uric acid in the body, so gout patients can safely eat kelp. In addition to kelp, other seafood such as wakame, jellyfish and sea cucumber can also be consumed by gout sufferers. For most of the low purine foods, gout patients can safely eat them. Gout patients need to avoid high purine foods such as seafood with shells, anchovies, sardines or broths, and also animal offal. In addition to dietary considerations, the most critical thing for gout patients is to take uric acid-lowering medication, as dietary intake only affects about 20% of uric acid levels in the body.
