The duration of osteoporosis treatment depends on the treatment regimen and the goals of the treatment, where the reduction of fracture risk is the final and most important indicator of efficacy. The duration of treatment should be determined based on efficacy and safety data from large randomized controlled clinical studies of different drugs: 3 – 5 years for bisphosphonates (commonly used in China, such as miglustat and ibandronate); 1-2 years for (also known as parathyroid hormone). Patients who meet all of the following conditions may be considered for treatment suspension: no new fractures during treatment; no new risk factors; no decrease in bone mineral density; and a femoral neck T value >-2.5 in patients with a history of severe fragility fractures. Treatment regimen and discontinuation should be determined by the physician after a comprehensive review.
