Definition
Scoliosis is a coronal curvature of the spine that most often occurs during the growth spurt before puberty. Although scoliosis often occurs in cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, etc., the cause of most scoliosis is still unknown.
In most cases, scoliosis is relatively insidious, but in some children the spinal deformity can become very severe as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be very dangerous, and a particularly severe scoliosis reduces the chest space, making it difficult for the lungs to work properly, which can affect the patient’s respiratory function and even heart function.
It is necessary to follow children with mild scoliosis closely, often using X-rays, to see if the scoliosis is getting worse. In many cases, mild scoliosis does not require treatment. Instead, some children will need a brace to stop the scoliosis from getting worse, and some may need surgery to correct severe scoliosis.
Symptoms
1. Signs and symptoms of scoliosis often include
2, unequal height of both shoulders
3.Spinal curvature and rotation
4.Protruding scapula on one side
5.Impartial lumbar region
6.Both hips are not equal in height
If the degree of scoliosis becomes more severe, in addition to the lateral curvature of the spine, the spine will also rotate or twist. This can lead to asymmetric growth of the ribs on both sides, which can lead to thoracic deformity. Severe scoliosis can cause back pain and difficulty breathing.
Etiology
Although there is a growing understanding of scoliosis, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown and medical doctors have named them idiopathic scoliosis.
Other causes of scoliosis may be.
1. neuromuscular problems, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
2, congenital defects that affect the development of the spinal bones
3, injury or spinal infection
Complications
Although many people have up to 10 degrees of scoliosis, the disorder is a relatively mild abnormality; whereas moderate to severe scoliosis may sometimes cause complications, including
1. damage to the lungs and heart. In severe scoliosis, the thorax can press on top of the lungs and heart, making it more difficult to breathe, while the heart becomes stressed.
2, middle-aged and elderly people with previous scoliosis are more likely to have chronic back pain and other symptoms of nerve compression.
3, As scoliosis worsens, it may lead to more pronounced cosmetic changes (including uneven shoulders, protruding ribs, hip asymmetry and a shift of the lower back and trunk to one side).
4. Scoliosis often causes great psychological stress to the patient; it affects the normal psychological development of children.
