How to treat optic nerve edema

The treatment of optic nerve edema differs for different reasons. However, regardless of the cause of optic nerve edema, the first step is to treat the cause symptomatically, as follows: 1. if the cause is intracranial tumor compression, the tumor should be removed by craniotomy, then treated symptomatically and nerve nutrition; 2. if the cause is fracture of the optic nerve canal caused by ocular trauma, the first step is to perform optic nerve decompression to release the compression and then treated symptomatically; 3. if the cause is orbital occupying lesion, the tumor must be removed to release the compression; 4. 4. If it is caused by optic nerve retinitis or optic nerve chorioretinitis, local and systemic glucocorticoids should be used regularly while removing the cause; 5. If it is caused by low intraocular pressure, pupil dilation should be performed appropriately while removing the cause to restore normal intraocular pressure, etc. In conclusion, optic nerve edema should be treated promptly, otherwise it can lead to blindness. In the middle and late stages, patients should be treated according to their general condition and behavioral manifestations, such as using traditional Chinese medicine to activate blood and water, clearing the orifice and brightening the eyes, or using acupuncture to treat the periocular points, which can get ideal results.
