Carpal tunnel syndrome, commonly known as “mouse hand”. This problem is diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome, which is often referred to as “mouse hand”. In this section, we will introduce the causes, pathology and acupuncture treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common clinical strain disorder. Before understanding carpal tunnel syndrome, we need to explain the anatomical structure of carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is a semi-enclosed canal in the wrist, consisting of the carpal bones and the ligaments and soft tissues of the wrist. The carpal tunnel contains blood vessels and nerves that travel through it. All the blood vessels and nerves in the upper extremity have to pass through the carpal tunnel to reach the distal part of the fingers. Therefore, this anatomical structure of the carpal tunnel is quite important. In the carpal tunnel, there is a nerve called the median nerve, which is a nerve that runs from the elbow to the finger. If the median nerve is compressed, a series of symptoms such as numbness, swelling, pain, and loss of strength in the distal finger area will occur. In this area of the carpal tunnel, narrowing due to various factors, such as osteophytes in the wrist, soft tissue growth, ligament edema, etc., can compress the median nerve and produce the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. A common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is prolonged dorsal extension of the wrist, which means that the wrist is tilted towards the back of the hand. This is the position of a computer mouse, for example, when it is used for a long time. The muscles of the wrist are always in a tight and tense state, and over time there will be soft tissue strain, combined with osteophytes and other problems, there will also be ligamentous hypertrophy, at this time the volume of the carpal tunnel will be correspondingly smaller, compression to the median nerve, and will produce carpal tunnel syndrome. This is why we say that carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in copywriters, and the long-term repeated use of the mouse, the wrist in a state of spasm, stiffness, is directly related. Carpal tunnel syndrome still has a certain impact on a person’s ability to work. The patient’s fingers remain in a state of numbness or pain and become stiff and inflexible, which can affect work efficiency. In terms of treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, since it is a strain disorder, there is no medication that can effectively relieve the symptoms. In severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, even carpal tunnel release surgery is required. Here we introduce the moxibustion treatment from the perspective of traditional medicine. You can moxibustion Yangchi point to relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. The Yangchi point is on the wrist, on the transverse wrist line on the back, which is the side of the wrist on the back of the hand, a horizontal line on the wrist joint. From the outer side of the transverse wrist stripe, which is the thumb side, to the inner side of the transverse wrist stripe, which is the little finger side, there are three acupoints, Yangxi, Yangchi, and Yanggu, respectively. The Yangxi point is located at the thumb end of the transverse wrist line, and the Yanggu point is located at the end of the transverse wrist line near the little finger. Once these two points are taken, their midpoint is the Yangchi point. The Yangchi point is a localized point near the carpal tunnel. We can use moxibustion at the Yangchi point to remove the soreness of the wrist. This can be done by using the moxa stick gentle moxibustion method. Moxa sticks are usually packaged in packs of ten and one of them is removed. The outside of the moxa stick has a layer of cardboard, which we peel off because it does not burn well. Inside is the moxa wool wrapped in mulberry paper, forming a long cigar like smoke. We light one end of the moxa stick and gently blow it red to reach the most vigorous fire, hanging the lit end of the moxa stick on the Yangchi point three centimeters to five centimeters, the degree is the acupuncture point local feel hot, but not feel hot. Using the Yangchi point as the center of the circle, moxibustion is performed in a circular motion over the Yangchi point, so that the heat penetrates the Yangchi point and can effectively relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Moxibustion can be done once a day for ten minutes at a time. In addition, if you have the condition to go to the hospital for treatment, acupuncture at the Waiguan point, which is confirmed by our previous research, can be a very good way to relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, reduce the pressure in the carpal tunnel, and relieve the patient of numbness and tingling, and even this manifestation of decreased muscle strength. With persistent treatment, most patients can slow down the progression of the disease and not progress to surgery.
