The procedure for an eyelid cyst, also known as a sebaceous cyst of the eyelid, is as follows: the patient is placed supine on the operating table and routinely sterilized, the head is wrapped, a sterile cavity towel is placed, and a local infiltration anesthetic around the swelling is performed with a 2% lidocaine injection of 0.5 ml. A moderately sized skin incision is made with a circular blade in the direction of the eyelid skin line, the tissue around the swelling is separated, the swelling is removed completely, sent to pathology for a clear diagnosis, and pressure is applied to stop the bleeding. 5-0 sutures or 7-0 sutures are used to close the skin incision in layers and intermittently, tobramycin dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment is applied, and the surgical eye is bandaged.
