What are the herbs for liver and kidney yin deficiency?



Chinese herbs that can be used clinically to replenish Yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys (insufficient Yin fluid in the liver and kidneys) include yam and wolfberry. Follow your doctor’s instructions for specific medications.

Yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys refers to a deficiency of yin fluid in the liver and kidneys and internal disturbance of deficiency heat. Symptoms such as lumbago and dystocia (pain in the area of the ribs), dizziness, tinnitus and spermatorrhea can usually be seen.

Yam is sweet in taste and flat in nature, and belongs to the spleen, lung and kidney meridians. It has the efficacy of tonifying the spleen and nourishing the stomach, generating fluids and benefiting the lungs, tonifying the kidney and astringing the essence, and is commonly used clinically for treating symptoms of lung deficiency and coughing, spermatorrhea, loss of appetite, prolonged diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, and frequency of urination. Attention to dampness in the fullness (dampness is too heavy to cause fullness and discomfort in the spleen and stomach) or solid evil, stagnation is prohibited.

Lycium barbarum is sweet in taste and flat in nature, and belongs to the liver, kidney and lung meridians. It has the effects of nourishing the liver and kidney, benefiting the essence and brightening the eyes (tonifying the essence and promoting the recovery of vision), and is commonly used clinically for treating lumbar and knee pain caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, dizziness and tinnitus, impotence and spermatorrhea, and blurred vision. Caution should be exercised in cases of loose stools (thin and unformed feces) due to spleen deficiency.
