How is hyperthyroidism proptosis treated?

  There is no effective treatment for hyperthyroidism, but the common treatment methods are: 1. (1) Pay attention to eye hygiene and proper rest. Watch less TV, computer, etc. to minimize eye strain.  (2) symptomatic treatment: use eye drops containing hormones (dexamethasone or prednisone); eye fatigue can be used to reduce conjunctival congestion symptoms of eye drops such as Avedo, Runelux, etc. If there is conjunctivitis, keratitis and other comorbidities, anti-inflammatory drops can be used.  (3) Local hormone injections: Some patients with severe proptosis can be considered for postbulbar injections such as hormones, and ophthalmologists can be consulted for details.  (4) Acupuncture therapy: It has been reported that local treatment with acupuncture can alleviate the degree of proptosis.  (2) Systemic treatment: (1) Thyroid hormone: Thyroid hormone can inhibit postbulbar edema and may play a suppressive role in hyperthyroidism proptosis (2) Dexamethasone: Hormone oral and intravenous infusion may improve the patient’s immune hyperactivity and play a suppressive role in proptosis.  (3) Immunosuppressants: Immunosuppressants can effectively improve the immune hyperactivity of patients, and some scholars use them for the treatment of malignant proptosis.  (4) Yunque therapy: Radionuclide “Yunque” therapy is now also used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism proptosis, and can be tried if necessary, with the advantage of no toxic side effects.  (5) Plasma exchange: Less commonly used.  (6) Radiation therapy: Radioactive irradiation behind the ball may improve the symptoms.  (7) Surgical treatment: If the protrusion of the eye is severe and affects vision, etc., treatment such as surgical removal of the eye may be performed.
