A 2008 article in Thyroid illustrates the possible effects of smoking or smoking environments on thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO): worsening of pre-existing TAO, weakening of TAO treatment, progression of TAO after 131I treatment, and therefore the risks of smoking and smoking environments for patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism should be communicated.
