What surgery for hydrocephalus in the elderly

Hydrocephalus in the elderly is normal pressure hydrocephalus. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt is mainly a more effective treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus, but the results of the surgery are variable. Some people have symptomatic improvement immediately after surgery, and symptomatic improvement is very slow or not obvious. Among the effective treatments of surgery, mainly mental symptoms improve the fastest, followed by urinary incontinence and relatively slow improvement of gait. There are three types of cerebrospinal fluid shunts: ventriculoatrial shunt, ventriculoperitoneal shunt, and lumbar subarachnoid shunt, and the ventriculoatrial shunt was widely practiced in clinical practice in the past. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt is a shunt procedure that connects the ventricle to the silicone tube and shunt tube in the abdominal cavity, and the procedure is not difficult. Lumbar subarachnoid shunts in the ventricles are relatively easy to perform and can be performed and implemented with local anesthesia, so they are more suitable for patients who are elderly or in poor general condition. Complications of shunts often include infectious symptoms such as cerebrospinal meningitis and traumatic infection, as well as shunt blockage, subdural hematoma, intracerebral hematoma, and intracranial low pressure syndrome. In most cases, the ventricles can be seen to shrink by CT examination, and in some cases, the ventricles do not shrink and the symptoms are improved.
