I was very fortunate to join the JCS in 2008 and had the desire to do something for the Society. I am a psychologist and have been engaged in psychological research and treatment for 14 years, so I thought I might as well write some simple words to introduce my work to you. I know that short scientific articles are the most difficult to write, so it’s a challenge to myself, not necessarily accurate, but it’s all about communication. Many people currently believe that only people with psychological disorders need to see a psychiatrist, so a wrong understanding of psychotherapy has occurred. In fact, in developed countries, the main population of psychotherapy is often healthy people, and it is very interesting to see why only people with psychological problems can come to China for psychotherapy. The key to this problem is the misinterpretation of psychotherapy, which unfortunately is still being repeated in our society, causing more and more people who really need psychotherapy to turn away from psychologists. It is evident that due to the influence of traditional culture, many people actually lack a real understanding of psychotherapy, and even some professionals do not always speak clearly. There are many books on psychotherapy, with many different interpretations, and I like to leave behind the strict academic boundaries and speak in layman’s terms. So what is psychotherapy about? Through 14 years of clinical practice, I feel that psychotherapy is actually about helping visitors to understand themselves better. At this point, many people must have asked, “Don’t I know myself? Yes, we know what kind of food we like to eat, what kind of movies we like to watch, what kind of people we like to make friends with, where we put our shoes, how straight we like to talk, and how bad-tempered we are ……. It does sound like no one knows themselves better than they do. But when we think about it, it seems that these understandings are only limited to some of their own habits, that is to say, we are prone to see the results of their own behavior or emotions and think that they understand themselves, but we do not know why I like to eat such dishes, why weep for such movies, why we talk to him, why they like to put their shoes like this, why they sometimes have to talk like this. Why ……. Isn’t it? We only know some of our behavioral and emotional habits, but habits are often the result and not the cause. As you can see, we don’t know ourselves, and we sometimes don’t even know what we’re thinking or saying. Just as many people don’t actually know what psychotherapy is, but feel as if they understand it. The worst part is that we don’t know that we don’t know ourselves. So psychotherapy is about helping you to understand yourself. So, some people may ask, I don’t know myself, I can still live now, so why do I need to think about all these complicated issues? For example: Now there is a person who is distressed about not having his own housing, and I would be happy if the unit gave me a house. Soon, there was really a house in the unit, he was happy for 1 month, and immediately had a new worry, if only there was a one-room apartment. He thought he knew his needs well, and a few years later he got a two-room apartment, but he was still happy soon. When he got a villa, it turned out to be nothing more than that. He was bewildered and even more depressed because he found that he had lost his goal and suddenly felt as if he didn’t know himself anymore. Yes! With a house, he was still unhappy. It seemed that his real need was not a house, but just a temporary objectification. He always thought he knew himself well, but he didn’t know what he needed. If he understood his real needs, maybe even living in a rental house would be happier and more open than living in his own villa. This is why we need to know ourselves. If you know your own psychology, you will know more clearly what I really want to say and what I really want to do. Life will become simple and open. Sometimes looking at the busy crowd on the street, how many really know why they are busy, and how many people understand what they really want to get?
