Thoracoscopic surgery is the “gold standard” in the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax

The cause of spontaneous pneumothorax is mostly due to ruptured alveoli and is prone to recurrence. According to statistics, the possibility of recurrence of spontaneous pneumothorax within 2 years is 30-50%. After the first attack improves with conservative treatment, the recurrence rate is 45%; after the second attack still improves with conservative treatment, the recurrence rate rises to 75%; if the third attack occurs, 100% of the attacks will be the fourth. There is no specific triggering factor for spontaneous pneumothorax: more than 80% of patients are at rest or in daily life when spontaneous pneumothorax attacks occur, and only about 9% of patients are in motion. Yang Yulun, Department of Thoracic Surgery, Zhengzhou People’s Hospital The traditional methods for treating spontaneous pneumothorax are: (1) thoracentesis to extract the gas from the chest cavity; (2) closed drainage of the chest cavity, i.e., making a small cut in the chest wall and placing a drainage tube to draw out the gas; however, these two methods only have the effect of relieving the symptoms, but do not solve the cause of pneumothorax – pulmonary alveoli. -Therefore, it is easy to recur. (3) Open-heart surgery with sutures to remove the alveoli can effectively cure spontaneous pneumothorax, but it is very traumatic, painful and slow to recover.    Thoracoscopic surgery is the “gold standard” for the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax. It only requires 2-3 small incisions of 1.5-2cm in the chest wall to remove the alveoli and cure the spontaneous pneumothorax. Of course, it is less traumatic, less painful, quick recovery, and you can get out of bed on the same day after surgery, and you can be discharged from the hospital in 3-5 days.
