Penile ulcers are not a single condition but a symptom of a variety of penile disorders, caused by necrosis of the superficial penile tissue, cell lysis and the presence of bacterial colonisation. Common diseases that can cause penile ulcers include chancre, genital herpes, herpes zoster and venereal lymphogranuloma.
