When patients reach the advanced stage of leukemia, the general condition of the body is poor, the immunity is low, and infections are very likely to occur. Because of the poor tolerance of the body, once infection occurs the disease can rapidly worsen or deteriorate, leading to the death of the patient, so it is important to prevent infection in the late stages of the disease.
Because of abnormal bone marrow hematopoiesis, patients may have extremely low platelets and red blood cells and abnormal coagulation in the late stage. Prompt blood transfusion and symptomatic treatment should be given to avoid causing acute diffuse intravascular coagulation, which may lead to death of the patient if treatment is not timely.
In addition, patients with advanced leukemia may infiltrate various organs, such as the brain, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary system, and the body is no longer able to tolerate chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, so symptomatic supportive therapy should be given to alleviate the patient’s suffering as much as possible.
