Lamotrigine has been marketed in my home country in 2002 and has been used in neurology for epilepsy treatment. It was later confirmed that this drug, like carbamazepine, valproate and other antiepileptic drugs, has good efficacy in the treatment of bipolar disorder as an emotional stabilizer, especially in the prevention of relapse, with comparable or even better effects than lithium carbonate. It has long been approved for use in bipolar disorder in the United States and other Western countries, and is also recommended as a first-line medication in China’s Bipolar Disorder Treatment Guidelines. Xiaolan Di, Department of Psychiatry, Beijing Huilongguan Hospital In view of so many clinical validations and evidence-based research results, in order to legally use this drug for bipolar disorder patients in China, approved by the State Drug Administration, GlaxoSmithKline has applied for a clinical study of lamotrigine for relapse prevention in bipolar I disorder. Hundreds of bipolar disorder patients need to be recruited nationwide. Patients are required to participate in the study on a completely voluntary basis and only after fully understanding the purpose of the study and signing an Informed Consent Form. The study is conducted in strict accordance with relevant laws and research procedures, and patients have the right to withdraw at any time during the study. Study-related medications are completely free of charge, as are related somatic and laboratory tests. No registration is required during follow-up visits, and one-on-one consultation and assessment is conducted directly by a dedicated study doctor by appointment, with a research team working together to provide patients with a full range of services. Patients who were not hospitalized were given a subsidy for transportation costs for each follow-up appointment. Because the duration of this study varies from several months to 52 weeks, and because the first 10 weeks will require weekly follow-up appointments (either on Saturdays or Sundays), patients are urged to consider this carefully. Patients wishing to participate in this trial can contact me through this website or come to my clinic, or find me at the Beijing Huilongguan Hospital Pharmacology Research Center (62715511 ext. 6297).
