Staging and diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Staging of liver cancer is closely related to prognosis and is also an important basis for choosing treatment plan. Different countries, different regions and different specialties may base on different standards of liver cancer staging. Our country has formulated the treatment standard of primary liver cancer and also carried out the latest updated staging, including four stages, namely stage I, II, III and IV. Stage I includes stage IA and IB, stage II includes stage IIA and IIB, and stage III includes stage IIIA and IIIB. Besides differentiation based on tumor size, number, presence or absence of metastasis and vascular invasion, liver cancer staging also requires consideration of liver function status and patient’s physical fitness status for comprehensive consideration. At present, the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma is mainly based on auxiliary examinations, including imaging, serological examination and pathological histological examination.
