Meridian identification treatment of headache

Headache is a common clinical symptom, often with a sudden onset and more severe. The etiology of headache is complex, and the course of the disease is prolonged and difficult to heal. As stated in Wang Kentang’s “The Standard of Treatment”, “The head is like the sky, where the qi of the three yang and six bowels of the body, all meet; and the blood of the three yin and five Tibetan essences, all are injected here. So the weather, the six evil spirits, the popularity of the change, the five thieves of the rebellion, all can harm each other …….” Meridian identification is the main content of the outline of identification. They are the main body parts of the body, running through the internal organs, contacting the internal and external, running qi and blood, connecting the body into an organic whole. In the clinical treatment of headache, according to the theory of “what is inside must be shaped outside, what is outside must be seen inside”, according to the different parts of the headache, combined with the meridian circulation route, the treatment from meridian identification can often obtain unexpected results. Posterior headache Posterior headache is mostly caused by the attack of wind-cold evil on the solar meridian, which often causes headache and pain even to the back of the neck, and is accompanied by a series of symptoms of wind-cold symptoms. The main treatment is to remove wind and cold, harmonize qi and blood, and open up the meridians. According to the theory that the upper disease is taken from the lower part of the body, the headache is stopped by taking the well point to Yin and the original point to Kunlun, where the meridian qi of the foot and solar bladder originates, and local points such as Fengchi and Fengfu are used. Headache in cervical spondylosis is treated from the Governor’s Vessel. This organ says: “the meridian, so the flow of qi and blood and Ying Yin and Yang, moisten the tendons and joints also.” The Governor Vessel starts from Changqiang, enters the kidney through the waist, travels in the spine and cervical vertebrae, and goes up to the human brain. Therefore, the Governor Vessel has a close relationship with the kidney, brain and spinal cord. The Yang Qi of the Governor Vessel is the main Qi of all the Yangs, moistening the Qi and blood of the spine and cervical vertebrae meridians. Most cervical spine diseases are due to evil staying in the joints of the Governor’s Vessel or stagnation of Qi and blood in the Governor’s Vessel, resulting in stagnation of the Governor’s Vessel. The kidney is the master of bone marrow, and the stagnation and blockage of the Governor Vessel prevents the essence of the kidney from moistening the cervical vertebrae through the operation of the Governor Vessel and filling the brain, so that the up and down do not intersect and the essence and blood do not penetrate, resulting in cervical spondylosis headache. The treatment is to warm up the Governor Vessel, dispel stasis and relieve pain, and regulate Qi and blood. Forehead headache is treated from Yangming The forehead is where the Yangming stomach meridian is distributed, and the pain there is mostly due to the stagnation and congestion of the stomach and the loss of its smoothness, so it should be treated from the stomach and internal organs. “The stomach should be lowered to be in harmony, the stomach and internal organs are not lowered, the central jiao is congested, the internal Qi does not pass, the depression turns into fire, reverses through the meridian, and the headache develops. The treatment should be to attack the stagnation, pass the internal organs to relieve pain. The stomach and internal organs are open, the turbid gas goes down, and there is no change of upward rebellion, which is also the treatment of the disease. The diarrhea of the middle cavity can clear the heat of the stomach and internal organs, regulate the qi and blood of Yangming, thus stopping forehead pain. In addition, it can often be combined with the treatment of the stomach meridian Xingying to clear the stomach heat. The treatment of upside-down headache is based on the theory of syncope. The Treatise on Typhoid: “For headache, dry vomiting and salivation, Wu Ju Tang is the mainstay.” The Liver meridian of the Foot and the Liver meridian goes up to the forehead and meets with the Directing Vessel at the top of the headache. The cause of upside-down headache is in the sympathetic yin, liver vein and stomach, stomach by the liver and descending, the water and grain can be excreted; cold coagulation sympathetic yin, liver by the cold evil, liver and stomach is not harmonious, the stomach cold stop drinking, blocking the clear yang, turbid yin through the warp upward, directly offend the upside-down, the development of upside-down headache, nausea and vomiting. The treatment is to warm the meridians and disperse cold, lower the rebellion and relieve pain. The formula is Wu Zhu Yu Tang plus or minus. It is also common in patients with hypertension and emotional agitation, and is treated with Si Shen Cong, He Gu and Tai Chong. Hegu has the function of harmonizing the stomach and resolving dampness, while Taichong is the convergence of the original qi of the liver meridian, which can dredge the liver and regulate the qi. The two original points together are called “Si Shen Cong”, which together can dredge the liver and disperse cold, subdue rebelliousness and resolve turbidity, and dredge the meridians. For those with hyperactivity of liver and yang, the use of Si Shen Cong acupuncture point to release blood can be effective immediately, and also has a certain effect on lowering blood pressure. Migraine headache is related to Shaoyang, and the duration of the disease is generally long and difficult to heal. The disease is also related to “stasis” and “luo”, so the treatment should be based on clearing liver and gallbladder fire and searching for blood stasis in the meridians. The formula is based on Danjiania Prosperity San plus Paeonia Glycyrrhizae Tang with reduction. Professor He Puren, a famous acupuncturist, has collected many years of clinical experience and selected a group of effective acupuncture points to promote the dispersal of Shao Yang in the hands and feet and to relieve wind and pain, namely: Sizukong, Hegu, Li Gu, and Foot Lin Weep. This group of points can be used as the basic matching points for the treatment of all types of migraine. This is because it is not only a point of the Shaoyang meridian, which treats migraine, but also a meeting point of the Shaoyang and Sun meridians, which has the effect of dispersing the wind-heat of Shaoyang and allowing it to reach the surface along the Sun meridian. Therefore, it is an effective main point for treating all migraines. Hegu is the original point of the Hand Yangming meridian and has a wide range of therapeutic effects, having a calming and sedative effect on pain. According to the Five Elements, this point is wood, so it is even more prominent for evacuating Shaoyang. According to the “Ma Danyang Tianxing Twelve Points for Miscellaneous Diseases”, the point is good for treating migraine headaches. It is also a wood point according to the nature of the five elements, so it is very effective in draining wind-heat from Shaoyang, and it is located on the foot, so it is far away from the disease and leads heat downward. In the case of external wind, it is often seen as persistent swelling and pain on the side of the head, aggravated by wind and cold, and tightness in the neck, and can often be treated with Fengchi, Quchi, and Jiejiao. If the liver and gallbladder type is characterized by pain on the side of the head, pain like cutting, redness of the face, etc., it is often treated with the acupuncture points of Silvus, Neiyingxiang and Xingma, which have significant effects in calming the liver and draining the wind. For the weak spleen and stomach type, migraine headache, distention and stuffiness like wrapping, stuffiness and lack of appetite are often combined with acupuncture and moxibustion for hanging cranium, jaw looseness, middle epigastrium, foot sanli or Fenglong and Qihai. In addition to their outstanding effect on migraine in the circulation of meridians, they are also the points where foot Shaoyang and foot Yangming meet and have the effect of draining the stomach and invigorating the central Yang. Zhonggui and Fu San Li, together with Feng Long, strengthen the function of strengthening the spleen and resolving phlegm, and Qi Hai is used to treat all deficiencies and hundred losses, and to cultivate the lower jiao, so that the middle earth will be supplemented by itself, and the addition of moxibustion increases the effect of warming and tonifying. Full headache Full headache can be caused by phlegm-dampness blocking the ligaments, kidney essence deficiency and qi-blood deficiency, with different typical symptoms and treatment. For headache with phlegm-dampness, we can take the point of the middle epigastric region, because the Ren vein is the total yin of the whole body, and water metabolism is also related to the Ren vein. Therefore, the point of the middle epigastric region of the Ren vein should be needled to dry dampness, transform phlegm and lower turbidity, so that there is no opportunity for phlegm-dampness to be born. In the case of kidney deficiency headache, treatment can be given to Baihui, Shangxing and Guangyuan to nourish kidney yin and moisten the channels. Both Baihui and Shangxing are points of the Directing Vessel, and Baihui is also one of the five points of Sanyang, which, together with Shangxing, are located in the head and can lead the essence of qi and blood up to the brain, nourishing the brain channels and promoting blood flow. Guan Yuan is an important point to nourish the kidneys, which can nourish the kidneys and nourish the brain marrow and stop the headache. If there is a deficit of qi and blood, you can use the tonic method in the epigastric region and moxibustion in Shenting. The spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood biochemistry, and Zhongyu can strengthen the spleen and stomach and promote qi and blood biochemistry. Shenting is a point of the Directing Vessel, which supervises the Yang of the body. The two acupuncture points complement each other to nourish Qi and Blood and improve the flow of Qi and Blood to stop pain.
