Ms. Liu called to ask: Since the beginning of the year, I have had some pain in my lower back, and the doctor diagnosed it as “osteoporosis”. Why does osteoporosis cause lower back pain? Doctor’s answer: In clinical work, bone pain and fractures caused by osteoporosis are extremely common. Osteoporosis can occur in different genders and ages, but it is mostly seen in postmenopausal women and the elderly population. The main clinical manifestations are skeletal pain, the appearance of turtle back, shortening of height and fractures. The characteristics of low back pain caused by osteoporosis are as follows: initially, low back pain occurs as soon as activity begins, and gradually develops into constant pain thereafter; the pain is aggravated when sitting or standing for long periods of time in a fixed position; the low back pain is aggravated when performing daily activities such as holding objects upward with the hands or opening windows with force. When a fracture occurs in the thoracolumbar spine, the pain in the low back is severe and there is obvious percussion pain in the spinous process; elderly osteoporotic pain is manifested as generalized bone pain, and in severe cases, it is impossible to sleep. Many studies have proven that exercise is one of the effective measures to ensure bone health. Therefore, rehabilitation exercise is an effective method to treat and prevent osteoporosis. When exercising, middle-aged and elderly people should follow the following three principles: individual principle, that is, according to the individual’s physiological state and motor function differences, choose the form of exercise suitable for themselves. Judgment principle, that is, when choosing the exercise form, the exercise intensity and frequency should be appropriate for the individual to tolerate; weight-bearing, resistance and overload exercise can produce bone effect and increase the local bone mass of weight-bearing bones. According to the above principles, I suggest that middle-aged and elderly friends can consider choosing sports such as brisk walking, dumbbell exercises, weight lifting and rowing.
