How far are you from osteoporosis?

Life is a long process of growth, and when one’s golden years come, the body gradually ages. Osteoporosis is one of the most typical “aging diseases”, but also a common human disease, mostly in the middle-aged and elderly. But do not think that this is only the patent of the elderly, not related to themselves, do not know, young people usually unhealthy behavior, later may affect our bone health. Recently, the Health Education School of the Central Hospital of Jinan City joined hands with this newspaper to carry out the “Popularize Health Knowledge” based on the Health Education School of the Central Hospital of Jinan City.
On May 24, Ning Bin, an attending spine surgeon at the hospital, gave a lecture on “prevention and treatment of osteoporosis”, and after the lecture, he gave a simple treatment to the elderly with related symptoms, and everyone gave a thumbs up. They all gave their thumbs up and thanked the downtown hospital for training such a good doctor for the public, and also thanked Ning Bin for his patience and seriousness. Causes of calcium deficiency are different, and correct knowledge is the key. “Nowadays, fractures caused by osteoporosis in the elderly show a year-on-year increase, which is caused by the improvement of living standards and higher and higher quality of life.” Ning Bin said that according to the prediction of experts in the medical field, by 2050, it is expected that the chances of the disease in women will be double than now. The improved quality of life will lead older people to seek more quality of life. “Once, I studied in a remote tourist city in Germany, and although the local population was small, there were often elderly people who came to visit, playing the same projects as young people, such as horseback riding and ball games, but the elderly inevitably had osteoporosis, so the chances of fracture increased greatly.” In the 2006 statistics of some provinces and cities in China, the prevalence of osteoporosis among the elderly over 60 years old was at 58.89%. According to the information, one-third of women over 50 will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis, compared to about one-fifth of men. This is because it is related to estrogen in the body. When a woman goes through menopause, her estrogen decreases sharply and she is far more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. “We didn’t have this concept that the condition was calcium deficiency, but over time we found out how to take calcium supplements and still have a calcium deficiency, and it was only after research that we finally discovered the cause. For example, if the bones are made of steel and concrete, how can they still be hard when they reach old age and the collagen is gradually lost and the steel is taken away? That’s what we mean by decreased bone density.” Ning Bin said that the same “calcium deficiency”, children and adolescents because of rapid growth, calcium absorption can not keep up with the growth rate, while the elderly is due to a decline in absorption capacity, the inability to absorb calcium. The elderly lack of physical activity, if there is also smoking, alcohol and other bad habits, the disease is very normal. Ning Bin reminded the majority of elderly people, once the bone pain, and can not say where the specific pain, or spinal deformation or even fracture, then immediately seek medical attention, early medical treatment to avoid more serious conditions. The most important thing is to have a reasonable diet and frequent medical checkups to prevent the disease. So, how does the medical profession determine whether osteoporosis is present? Ning Bin said that in hospitals, the criteria for determining osteoporosis are different, and the testing methods are also different, and they do not recognize each other. Doctors will judge according to the patient’s clinical performance, biochemical indicators, X-ray examination, bone densitometry and CT. Nowadays, the international trend is “the gold standard for osteoporosis diagnosis is to determine the degree of osteoporosis for early diagnosis and assessment of treatment efficacy”. This index is mutually recognized by major hospitals. In addition, Ning Bin told us that after the detection of bone loss, regular checkups should be conducted. Since osteoporosis is unavoidable, it is especially important to delay its appearance by early prevention. First of all, it is necessary to have a reasonable diet, which should be done from the teenage years. Foods such as fish, shrimp, shrimp skin, kelp, milk and eggs are good for bones, but the folklore of bone broth is not recommended for regular consumption because its high fat content can produce other diseases such as hyperlipidemia, which is not worth the loss. Women should take calcium supplements before menopause, avoid smoking and alcohol, drink less coffee and strong tea, prohibit carbonated drinks, eat less sugar and salt. The human muscle has a kind of “inertia”, use less, it will feel their “useless” and gradually atrophy, so to let the muscle perceive their “importance So to make the muscles aware of their “importance”, then you need to actively exercise. It is also known that sunbathing is a good way to get calcium absorbed in the body. Calcium is very poorly absorbed by oral calcium supplements alone, without the stimulating effect of ultraviolet light from the sun. Ning Bin explained a misconception, that is, do not sunbathe inside the window, that is useless, because most of the glass can block more than 90% of the ultraviolet rays, without the ultraviolet sunlight, in addition to warmth, it is difficult to produce results. Of course, to master the scale of sunbathing, sunburn will be counterproductive.
