What are the symptoms associated with different amounts of pleural effusion?

When the amount of effusion is small, patients have no symptoms such as shortness of breath and sometimes chest pain on the diseased side; when there is a medium to large amount of effusion in the pleural cavity (greater than or equal to 500ml), patients may experience varying degrees of chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing. As the amount of chest water increases, the chest pain may decrease or disappear.
