Difference between hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and bone marrow transplantation

Bone marrow transplantation is a kind of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which is named as bone marrow transplantation, peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, umbilical cord blood transplantation and so on according to different parts of the body from which the stem cells are taken.
1. Bone marrow transplantation is performed by extracting bone marrow from the bone marrow cavity using a puncture needle. This process requires local anesthesia, and then several punctures are made in the iliac bone of the donor to extract hundreds of milliliters of bone marrow mixture for bone marrow transplantation.
2. Peripheral Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation is a procedure to collect hematopoietic cells from the peripheral blood for stem cell transplantation. The process involves collecting blood from the donor’s vein and then enriching the hematopoietic stem cells through a machine to infuse the blood back into the patient’s body.
3. Umbilical cord blood transplantation is performed by collecting the umbilical cord blood of the fetus at the time of delivery and infusing the hematopoietic stem cells of the umbilical cord blood into the patient for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Specific transplantation selection and operation should be carried out under the guidance of a physician.
