What is strawberry hemangioma?

Strawberry hemangioma is the most common type of infantile hemangioma and belongs to superficial type of hemangioma, which almost always occurs from birth to several days after birth. It starts as a light red, not higher than a small red spot or patch, and then rapidly increases in size, thickens and rises above the skin, becoming bright red, with an unsmooth surface and fading when softly pressed, resembling a strawberry, hence the name strawberry hemangioma. The tumor often proliferates rapidly within 6 months of age and grows slowly from 6 months of age to 1 year of age, after which it gradually enters a long receding period. Pigmentation, dilated capillaries, fibrous and fatty tissue deposits may remain after the regression is complete.
