A deficiency of certain nutrients can lead to abnormalities in the body, and the eyes are no exception. 1 , Vitamin A deficiency Patients with vitamin A deficiency will have spasms, redness and swelling of the eyelids, photophobia, as well as blepharitis, blepharitis, or lid margin boils, and in severe cases, keratitis, corneal softening and perforation. Treatment of vitamin deficiency requires improved nutrition, vitamin supplementation, and topical anti-inflammatory drops and ointments. Vitamin B1 deficiency can manifest as optic neuritis, diplopia, and strabismus with paralytic ptosis. Treatment should be enhanced nutrition, vitamin B1 supplementation, and alcohol prohibition. Vitamin B2 deficiency is characterized by eyelid itching, photophobia, edema, blepharospasm, blepharitis, and seborrhea between the eyebrows. Treatment requires first treating the original disease, strengthening nutrition, and replenishing vitamins. 4, Niacin deficiency pemphigoid This condition is characterized by blepharitis, blepharitis, eyelid dermatitis, eyelid rash, and may include plasma exudation and crusting, infection, or ulceration. Vitamin D deficiency Vitamin D deficiency is manifested as blepharospasm, which is mostly part of facial neurospasm. Treatment is to enhance nutrition, oral cod liver oil, calcium and vitamin D supplementation. 7, Vitamin K deficiency Vitamin K deficiency is manifested by subcutaneous bleeding of the eyelids and occasional ptosis. Treatment is to enhance nutrition and vitamin K supplementation.
