How do doctors check for swollen gums?

Swollen gums, also known as gum swelling, are accompanied by red, swollen and painful gums, and bleeding is common when brushing. Swollen gums are mainly caused by local inflammation, mechanical injury and vitamin C deficiency. We need to conduct a detailed examination of the patient with swollen gums. There are many methods of examination, and the gum condition examination is the most direct one. It includes the color, shape and quality of the gums for examination. 1. Color. Healthy gum tissue should be pink from the free gingival margin to the membrane gingival union. When inflammation is controlled gum tissue can change from bright red or dark red to pink, which will be accompanied by swollen gums. Diabetes, anemia, erythrocytosis, and leukemia can cause gum color change. 2. Shape. The gingival margin is thin and fits the tooth surface, the gingival margin line should be scalloped, and the gingival papillae are tapered to fill the tooth space with neat edges. In inflammation, the gums are swollen, the edges are blunt and thick, or hypertrophic and hyperplastic, some drugs can also cause the gums to become hyperplastic and swollen, the gingival papillae may have ulcers or necrotic tissue, and the gums may also have gingival fissures. 3.Texture. Normal gingival tissue has a tough texture. When there is inflammation, the gingival texture becomes softer, or the gingival tissue becomes tougher as a result of fibrosis. The disappearance of the dotted color attached to the gums is an early symptom of gingivitis, but not all healthy gums have dotted color, so the texture of the gums should be observed.
