World Pain Day 2013 – Focus on orofacial pain Chronic pain as a medical condition has attracted a lot of attention worldwide, and the World Pain Congress has recognized pain as the “5th vital sign of human beings” after respiration, pulse, body temperature and blood pressure. Many pathological pain itself is a disease that seriously affects the quality of life and work of patients, and people are gradually realizing the importance of pain. The World Health Organization proposed in 2000 that “chronic pain is a category of disease”. According to authoritative statistics, 35% of people in Europe and the United States suffer from chronic pain, and the number is only higher than lower in China; about 5.5 million people in the world suffer from cancer pain every day, and about 57% of urban residents in China have experienced headaches of different degrees. Since the International Academy of Pain (IASP) initiated the establishment of World Pain Day in October 2004, the annual theme of the year against pain is released by IASP every October, which has become the most remarkable event in the global pain medicine community. “Global Day Against Pain”, with a theme, has become the focus of attention for the annual Global Year Against Pain. The theme of this year’s Global Year Against Pain is “Oral and Facial Pain”. Over the years, the Pain Society of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) has been actively responding to the call of the International Pain Society and has carried out multi-level and multi-faceted propaganda in various forms to raise the awareness of pain among the public, professionals and relevant government departments, which has greatly promoted the development of pain medicine in China. The Chinese Pain Society calls on medical institutions across the country to pay close attention to the problem of pain and to establish pain departments in hospitals above the second level, so as to create favorable conditions for the convenience of pain patients and scientific diagnosis and treatment of pain. The focus of this year’s theme is as follows: 1. The incidence of orofacial pain is high and the pain is severe, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. 2. It has been 6 years since our Ministry of Health promulgated document 227 in 2007 to establish pain departments in level 2 or higher hospitals. At present, all hospitals above level 2 have basically established pain departments, which have made positive contributions to relieving the pain of chronic pain patients. In order to meet this need and according to the specific situation in China, the Pain Branch of the Chinese Medical Association has determined that the focus of this year’s work is to strengthen the training of pain physicians and provide human resources support to further develop this leading edge in China.
