Are thyroid lesions serious?

The severity of the thyroid lesion depends on the specific disease and the severity of the disease.

If it is a nodular goiter, it is a benign occupying thyroid disorder that can be monitored by ultrasound of the thyroid gland in smaller cases, or surgically treated in larger cases that have produced neck compression. The disease does not affect daily life or the patient’s life expectancy.

In the case of hyperthyroidism, it is a benign disease of the thyroid gland. It is usually not serious and can be controlled with medication or radiation therapy in mild cases, or surgery in poorly controlled or severe cases.

If it is thyroid cancer, in other words a malignant disease of the thyroid gland, it depends on the type of pathology and how far along the thyroid cancer is. The most common of these is papillary thyroid cancer, which is generally not serious and will not affect life expectancy as long as surgery is performed in a timely manner and medication is taken as needed after surgery. In the rare case of undifferentiated thyroid cancer, the malignancy is very high and even with surgery, most patients are prone to metastases to other organs leading to death within a short period of time.
