What are the key points of post-operative care for craniopharyngioma?

What should craniopharyngioma patients and their families pay attention to after surgery? Craniopharyngioma is a benign tumor and can be completely cured with proper treatment. Total surgical resection is a proven method. However, the complexity of both surgical resection and postoperative care can cause permanent regrets to patients if they are not careful. Therefore, choosing the right treatment and care plan is a necessity to overcome craniopharyngioma. What should patients and their families pay attention to after surgery? 1. Abnormal urine volume As craniopharyngioma surgery may have different degrees of damage to the hypothalamus, it is easy to cause urinary collapse and water-electrolyte disorders. Therefore, accurately record the change of urine volume per unit time, observe the color of urine, and measure the specific gravity of urine if necessary. When the volume of urine per hour is less than 250ml, it can be temporarily left untreated and continue to be observed. If the blood sodium is greater than 145 mmol/L, patients with clear consciousness can take oral rehydration with plain water to promote the discharge of sodium and prevent water loss; patients who cannot eat can be injected with plain water via indwelling gastric tube. If the sodium is less than 135 mmol/L, oral rehydration salts or saline will be given to patients with craniopharyngioma. Therefore, regular blood tests are necessary after craniopharyngioma surgery. Observe the change of consciousness Intracranial hematoma, coma caused by electrolyte disorder and low hormone level in the body are the main reasons for the change of consciousness in craniopharyngioma after craniopharyngioma surgery. If the change of consciousness is sudden, accompanied by elevated blood pressure, increased pulse rate and unequal pupil size, the change of intracranial pressure should be considered first, and CT examination of head should be performed at this time. If the blood biochemical examination is normal and the patient still has clinical manifestations such as weakness, the hormone level may be low due to insufficient hormone supplementation or too rapid hormone reduction. In conclusion, when a patient has impaired consciousness, the cause should be evaluated based on data from many aspects and reported to the doctor in time to actively cooperate with resuscitation. 4.Visual field observation The visual field of the patient is recorded before the craniopharyngioma surgery, and the visual field should be evaluated again after the surgery to grasp the intracranial changes after the surgery, usually when the patient is in good mental condition after the surgery. If sudden changes occur, consider whether there is intracranial hemorrhage. As a family member of a patient with craniopharyngioma, you should actively cooperate with the medical staff to observe the patient after craniopharyngioma surgery. Pupillary changes often precede changes in vital signs, so postoperative observation of the bilateral pupils must be strengthened and any abnormalities should be reported to the physician in a timely manner. Give the appropriate treatment.
