Targeted therapy is a breakthrough in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma in recent years. Because targeted drugs are expensive and difficult for the average family to afford, the China Charity Federation has an assistance program for patients who wish to use targeted drugs but whose families have financial difficulties to apply for assistance. I am personally a charitable doctor participating in this program. I will briefly introduce the content and process of this program. The cost of targeted liver cancer drugs is about 50,000 RMB/month. For the first time patients, they need to purchase one and a half months’ worth of drugs at one time, which means it costs about 75,000 RMB (the patient pays for it). After taking the medicine for one and a half months, the patient needs to be reviewed in the hospital. If the treatment is effective and the tumor has not progressed or recurred, the patient is in the control period of the disease, and at this time, the patient can submit an application for assistance to the China Charity Federation. In other words, if the patient buys 1.5 months of medication before, plus 4.5 months of free medication, it is enough for half year (6 months) of medication. After six months, the patient needs to pay for another 1.5 months of medication on their own, which is about 75,000 yen, and then apply for the assistance program again (second application) to receive a lifetime gift of medication, but only if the patient takes the medication with good therapeutic effect. Overall, patients need to apply 2 times and spend about 150,000 RMB, after which they can receive a lifetime gift of medication. Because of the assistance from the China Charity Federation, it is a great help for families who are really struggling financially. The oldest patient I have is 94 years old and cannot have surgery because of his age, so he has to take targeted drugs, which he has been taking for half a year, and the results are still relatively good. The oldest of my patients has been taking targeted drugs for 4.5 years, and the results are also good. I have a positive attitude towards the use of targeted drugs. If a patient chooses to use the drugs, I will follow up regularly and if they are really effective, I will try my best to help the patient apply for charity assistance. The application period for charity aid is about 2 weeks, that is, after the patient sends the prepared documents, you can get a reply in 2 weeks. Usually the China Charity Federation will reply to the applicant within 10 working days after receiving the documents, telling the patient whether the approval will be approved or not, and if it is approved, the patient can go to his or her charity doctor to apply for the prescription of targeted drugs.
